by Tracy Walt

Modaks are often prepared during Ganesh Chaturthi because they are believed to be the deity’s favorite sweets. These sweet dumplings are traditionally prepared with rice flour and jaggery or coconut fillings.

However, this Ganesh Chaturthi, why not innovate by preparing Oreo Modaks for Bappa? These could be a nice twist on regular modaks, and might end up being a family favorite too!

Creative Ways to Make Oreo Modaks for Ganesh Chaturthi

Oreo Coconut Modak

What You Will Need:

  • 1 packet of Oreo biscuits
  • Dried and crushed coconut
  • 1-2 cups condensed milk or ghee

How You Can Make Them:

  1. Separate the Cookies: Twist the Oreo cookies and separate the cream part from the cookie part.
  2. Modak Dough Preparation: Blend the Oreo cookies until they turn into a fine powder and transfer the powder to a bowl. Pour some condensed milk into the bowl and mix thoroughly until the dough is smooth.
  3. Modak Filling Preparation: Mix the dried and crushed coconut with the Oreo cookie cream parts, and add the remaining condensed milk to create a thick paste.
  4. Cookie Dough Shaping: Shape the cookie dough into small balls by hand and flatten them. Then shape the filling into a small ball, transfer it to the cookie dough mix, and shape the whole mixture into a nice modak shape. Once everything is done, arrange the Oreo modaks on a plate, and offer them to the deity.

Oreo Ukidiche Modak

What You Will Need:

  • 1 packet of Oreo biscuits
  • Poppy seeds
  • Jaggery
  • Cardamom powder
  • Ghee
  • 2 or 2½ cups of Water
  • Salt
  • Freshly grated coconut
  • Nutmeg or Jaiphal
  • Rice flour

How You Can Make Them:

  1. Modak Filling Preparation: Heat some ghee in a pan and roast poppy seeds in it. Then add jaggery, coconut, cardamom and nutmeg over a low flame for 10 minutes or less, until the mixture thickens. Set it aside to cool.
  2. Dough Preparation: In another pan, add salt, ghee and water and boil this mixture until everything dissolves. Then add the rice flour, mix it properly, and cover the mixture with a lid for up to 5 minutes.

After that, blend the Oreo until properly crushed and add it to the mixture. Knead this into a dough, and shape it into small, smooth balls. Cover them after doing this.

  1. Modak Shaping: Flatten the balls into a disc shape, add the filling, and then shape the balls into a modak shape again.
  2. Time to Steam: Use the ghee to grease a steamer pan. Place the shaped modaks on the pan with some gaps between them. Cover the pan with a napkin or kitchen towel. Use 2 or 2½ cups of water in a pressure cooker or pot for steaming.

Since this is an important step in the Oreo modak recipe, be careful not to break the modaks during steaming by increasing the temperature.

  1. Final Steps: Once the modaks are ready, drizzle some ghee on them for a rich taste and offer them to the deity.

Oreo Modak Recipe With Mango Filling

What You Will Need:

  • 1 packet of Oreo biscuits
  • 1-2 teaspoons full-fat milk
  • Dried and crushed coconut for texture
  • 2-3 teaspoons of mango pulp
  • 2 teaspoons of roasted and chopped cashew nuts
  • Jaggery powder
  • Condensed milk (optional)
  • Mawa (optional)
  • Coconut (optional)

How You Can Make Them:

  1. Cookie Blending: Blend the Oreo cookies until you have a fine powder.
  2. Dough Preparation: Pour the full-fat milk carefully in intervals of 1 teaspoon each and keep mixing until the dough is flexible and smooth.
  3. Modak Filling Preparation: Add the mango pulp, jaggery powder, dried coconut and chopped roasted cashew nuts to a small mixing bowl and mix gently if required. Since this is the most important part of this Oreo modak recipe, ensure that the filling stays together when you press it between two fingers.
  4. Shaping: Grease a modak mold lightly, then scoop or take some of the modak dough and put it inside the mould. Leave some space for the filling. Use your fingers to transfer the filling to each modak, then close the mold by pressing down hard. Open it to release the modaks.
  5. Refrigerate: Line the modaks on a parchment paper-lined tray and refrigerate for up to minutes. Garnish with grated chocolate if you like and offer them to the deity.
